New Service in the area: Muscular Dystrophy Ireland

Muscular Dystrophy Ireland

Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI) is a voluntary organization, which was established in 1972 by a small group of people in the west of Ireland to support families who had a member with muscular dystrophy. Since then it has grown considerably and it now has a membership of over 580 members and a network of branches throughout Ireland. MDI’s primary objective is to provide information and support for people and their families who are affected by muscular dystrophy and allied neuromuscular conditions.

Muscular dystrophy is the collective name for a range of neuromuscular conditions, which are characterized by the progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles. It can affect adults and children. Some forms arise at birth or in childhood, others may not manifest themselves until later in life. Each type of muscular dystrophy arises from a different genetic mutation or deletion which is inherited from one or both parents, or is due to a spontaneous mutation. This means that there are many families who have more than one member with the condition.

There is no cure for muscular dystrophy but there have been huge advances in increasing the quality of life for people with the condition and scientists around the world are working hard to develop new treatments.

MDI provides support to individuals and families to assist them to live an independent life of their own choosing. Family Support Workers and Youth / Respite Workers work throughout Ireland and national supports including information and research, transport, respite, fundraising and PR are coordinated from MDI’s new Head Office in Chapelizod, Dublin 20. This building also houses a fully accessible apartment which is available for short term breaks for individuals and families.

Our Art, Our Library Community Art Project

On Friday the 22nd of May the Partnership hosted the first initial meeting for a community art project in conjunction with the Library being refurbished and reopening by the end of 2011 and Dublin City Council Arts Office.

The turn out was great with a strong cross section of local residents turning up to participate.  We hope this project will allow residents to engage with the refurbished library space and create a piece of artwork all the community can be proud of.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday the 28th May in the Ballyfermot/Chapelizod Partnership offices to discuss the projects that will run and start the research and development phase of these ideas.

All ideas were innovative and creative and we look forward to the project commencing.

Many thanks to all who participated and if anyone is still interested in joining the group please feel free to contact Carolann Courtney in the Community Development Department of the Partnership.

A temporary studio will be running from the 17th June in the Family Resource Centre in Lynches Lane adn all are welcome to drop in and see the work progressing on.

Community Arts Event

Disability 1 Issue Project presents:

Time:                   10am
Date:                    Thursday 28th April 2011
Venue:                 Woodquay, Dublin City Council Civic Offices,
Dublin 8

Event:  Disability 1 Initiative (Community Arts)

“Dublin Partnerships Working to Support People with Disability”

The Disability 1 Initiative has been developed by key Local Development Companies across Dublin who are working together to ensure that the needs of people living with disability remain high on their Social Inclusion agendas. Working directly with those living with disability, the Partnerships recently supported their participation in 6 local area Arts projects. This event has been organised to showcase the Art pieces and to encourage discussion about continuing to support people living with Disability through the work of local area Partnerships.

10AM Exhibition Opening

The opening will be followed by presentations of the artwork and discussions focusing on the role of area Partnerships in meeting the challenges of disability and Social Inclusion, the role the Arts can play in addressing barriers to inclusion for people living with disability and societal attitudes to disability in Ireland today.

Maureen McGovern, Community Development Links Worker with Canals Community Partnership said “Over the last 20 years Ireland have seen a lot of positive changes to our environment to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities, but disabled people are not participating to any great extent because the biggest barrier of all has not been broken down yet and that is attitudes.    To change attitudes, disabled people and non-disabled people have been working together across the City over the last few months to begin removing disabling barriers by producing art pieces together. The Partnerships will continue to work together under the Disability 1 Imitative to achieve the true inclusion of disabled people in communities”.

You are invited to send a Photographer and Reporter to this event.

Wall of Issues from 2009 Local Election -V- 2011 General Election: What has changed?

Here are some of the issues raised through the Partnerships consultation for the 2009 Local Elections with agencies and groups in the Ballyfermot area.  These work sheets were on display during the "Questions and Ansewers" session that took place in the Civic Centre that year.

During our Annual and Strategic Planning for the coming weeks we will be approaching community stake holders to ask these questions again.  Are these still important issues that affect day to day living in the area?
Do you have other issues you would like to raise?  As the General Election looms ever closer, do you have questions to ask the candidates canvassing for your vote?  Feel free to comment below:

Equality and Rights Alliance 2011 Election Campaign

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO

Equality & Rights Alliance got Election 2011 underway on Monday January 17th with the launch of our Make Your Mark campaign.  You can read about it here: http://www.eracampaign.org/press-coverage-1/m:5,145

As a coalition of 155 organisation and activists, we can potentially rally up to a quarter of a million people to Make their Mark for Equality and Human Rights in Election 2011
We can only do this with the help and support of ERA members.

We are aware of the pressure you are all working under and the need to ensure that your own specific messages are relayed to candidates.  However, we hope that the message that equality and human rights matter can dovetail with your specific issues of concern.  Below are three simple start-up actions.  Over the coming weeks we will send you updates and more materials for easy campaigning.

1.       Declare it on the doorsteps

·         Download and circulate our cut-out election door-hanger and display it on, or keep close to, your front door: http://www.eracampaign.org/uploads/Door%20hanger-1.
·         Download and circulate the ERA election campaign poser: http://www.eracampaign.org/uploads/Election%202011%20poster.pdf
·         Ask your candidates, and their canvassers, if they will protect and promote equality and human rights.  Find out what their views are and let us know.

2.           It’s the Vote that Counts

·         Send the link to your members/colleagues/friends.
·         We have produced a short video.  Watch it at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBB4ss2xF-0 and send the link to colleagues/friends
·         Upload the video to your organisation web-page and your facebook page.
·         Send it to your local candidates.

3.           Social Media

·         Add our election twibbon to your personal /your organisation facebook and Twitter profiles   http://twibbon.com/join/Make-your-mark-6
